African Border Management & Security Conference

28-30 November in Johannesburg, South Africa

Improve the resilience of southern Africa’s armed forces and border security authorities to efficiently protect the regions bountiful resources

DABSEC will bring together the key policy-makers across the region to deliberate the issues relating to the management of Southern Africa’s borders. The conference will look at the key policy issues that need to be addressed in developing solutions to effectively manage border controls including joint operations to maximize border security, advanced tactics to detect, monitor and control border crossings, cargo screenings, surveillance and monitoring and wildlife conservation.

The launch of the Border Management Authority in South Africa was a stepping stone for interagency cooperation within the region to combat the challenges facing border security. The passing of the bill comes at a time when the threats of illegal migration and transportation of banned substances are at the forefront of the regions national security agenda. An integrated border management concept is therefore needed across the Southern African region to help aid the armed forces, border guards, customs, and other officials in the journey towards improved resilience against illicit cross border activity.

Key themes of the conference:

  • Building a coherent border management response against wildlife poaching, illegal migration and smuggling of illicit goods
  • Improving interagency co-operation and information sharing to aid the global fight against international terrorism and cross border organized crime
  • Implementing a sharing database with all relevant stakeholders to standardize systems at the nations borders
  • Developing integrated border management and advanced technology systems to support mass migration
  • Deploying biometric technologies at the borders – Compliance, Application and Implementation
  • Creating an annual event for border security personnel in southern Africa to share their insights for improving the security resilience of the nation, region and globe
